He’s the Birmingham teacher who always does his homework – as his TV quiz success proves.
John Robinson was last night crowned champion of telly’s toughest test, Mastermind.
But it was far from his first win on the box – he scooped £500,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire in 2019.

John, who lives in Sutton Coldfield and teaches English at Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Kings Heath, said: “I cannot quite believe I have won the final of Mastermind. I’m not often lost for words, but I think this is one of those occasions where I don’t know what to say. I’m just delighted.
“I constantly tell the students that I teach, if you put effort into your revision, you’ll get reward at the end of it so hopefully the kids can look at me and be inspired by the hard work that I’ve put in as well.”

In a thrilling conclusion to the show’s 52nd series, John triumphed with an impressive tally of 30 points, sealing his victory by correctly answering the last question of the series. His expertise shone through in the specialist subject round, where he racked up 12 points discussing The Empire State Building, and sported a shirt emblazoned with the famed New York landmark.
Despite scooping the life-changing sum of money on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, John said picking up the famous glass bowl as Mastermind champion 2025 was an experience money could not buy.
School Principal Dr James Coughlan said: “We’re incredibly proud of John, all the hard work he’s put into Mastermind this year, and we’ve got that space waiting for the Glass Bowl in the trophy cabinet”.
Mastermind host Clive Myrie said: “What a cracking final it was! A nerve-jangler right to the very end. Congratulations to all our contenders for making it a memorable series, and to John, who did himself proud.”
