A 16-year-old boy has been arrested under the Terrorism Act after four suspected viable explosive devices were discovered during a search at a property in Co Tyrone.
The find was made by police during a planned search at an address in the Gardenville Avenue area of Omagh on Monday morning.
A security alert was declared once the first suspicious device was found and residents were told to leave their homes at around 10am.
Cordons were then put in place around the estate close to the junction of the Gortin Road and Killybrack Road.
Ammunition Technical Officers examined the suspicious device found at the property before three more were later discovered.
All four, which police believe to be viable explosive devices, have been taken away for forensic examination, and the alert has since ended.
Evacuated residents have since been allowed to return to their homes.
Police said the investigation into a motive was continuing, and urged the public not to speculate.
The teenager remains in custody.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police carried out a planned search at an address in the Gardenville Avenue area of the town this morning, Monday 24th August.
“Following the discovery of a suspicious device, cordons were put in place and a number of residents had to leave their homes while Ammunition Technical Officers carried out an examination.
“Three further suspicious devices were found as our search continued. At this stage, we believe that all four are viable explosive devices and they have since been removed from the property for forensic examination.
“A 16-year-old male was arrested under the Terrorism Act and remains in police custody at this time.
“Detectives are working at pace. We would urge the public not to speculate – it’s important to stress that, while the suspect has been arrested under the Terrorism Act, our investigation to establish a motive remains very much ongoing.”
