Harry Styles has opened up about why he took some time away from the spotlight, admitting that he was “a little bit in my head”.
After finishing his 2023 solo tour, the former One Direction star returned to the industry with a bang with his latest album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, this March.
In a new interview with W Magazine, the performer has explained that he “took time off” to prioritise “living from the inside out” as a way to fend off external pressures and opinions.
The ‘Pop’ singer explained: “A big part of the break was about recalibrating the image of myself that I felt I was accidentally swallowing all the time – that was being reflected back at me but that I didn’t want necessarily.”
He added reflectively, “It’s such an unnatural thing to be shown other people’s perception of you all the time.”
This unusual relationship meant that Styles found himself “a little bit in my head about moving through the world and feeling very aware of how everything was being perceived toward the end of the last tour. A lot of the time off was about getting back to living from the inside out.”
It became a question of relationality, with the star explaining that the heightened “emphasis” on his music being self-referential led to “a really complex relationship to have with yourself“.
Styles eventually found himself becoming “so disconnected from the world, the universe and people. Then you stop being able to relate.”
However, the performer has formed a healthier relationship with fame, sharing: “It’s actually really liberating to acknowledge that it’s so much bigger than me.”
Styles’ impressive career boasts four UK number one singles and three UK number one albums alongside several Brit and Grammy awards.
The performer will soon kick off his 30-show residency in New York at Madison Square Garden, which will keep him in the Big Apple from August 26th until October 31st. Styles also has dates lined up in Melbourne and Sydney later this year.
