Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has said Rhys Norrington-Davies is “not going anywhere” at the moment.
Sheffield United loaned Rhys Norrington-Davies to QPR last summer after he dropped behind Harrison Burrows and Sam McCallum in the pecking order. The two left-backs remain at SUFC, but amid a shortage of defenders and limited transfer movement, Norrington-Davies is back in the frame at Bramall Lane.
It had been expected he would depart with Portsmouth keen, but Chris Wilder said after the Carabao Cup win over Blackburn Rovers that Norrington-Davies is not available for a move at present. As quoted by The Star, he said: “As far as I’m concerned, not going anywhere at this particular moment.
“We want to be flexible. We want to sometimes go into a three, which we talked about. So, for me, Rhys is with us and we’re delighted to have him with us.”
Why Rhys Norrington-Davies can still be a valuable asset for Sheffield United
Norrington-Davies had a tough couple of years before the 2025/26 campaign. He had dropped down the Sheffield United pecking order amid spells on the sidelines through injury.
Many believed the QPR loan would give Norrington-Davies the platform to get back to playing regularly before a permanent exit, and it did. He was Julien Stephan’s go-to at left-back as he reminded everyone he can be a steady option at Championship level.

But, given the situation at SUFC, it seems more likely that he retains a role in their plans. As Wilder highlighted, Norrington-Davies’ ability to slot in on the left-hand side of the back three gives them flexibility when it comes to their tactical setup.
His experience in the Championship and on the international stage with Wales means he is more than capable of adding welcome depth to the Blades’ squad. When their defensive options are so limited and transfer business is restricted, keeping Norrington-Davies is the smart play.
The Verdict: Norrington-Davies exit stance does not end Sheffield United’s need for centre-back reinforcements
Although Norrington-Davies is currently staying and offers another option at centre-back when required, Sheffield United can not rest on their laurels in the pursuit of new signings in that position.
Mark McGuinness and Nils Zatterstrom were both named as players who were free to leave but remain at present. The former is essential given the lack of depth, and it could mean he ends up staying at SUFC.
Even if that is the case though, the Blades have to add more depth at the heart of defence. Jamal Baptiste is still only young and not quite ready to jump into Championship football, and Japhet Tanganga is the only other out-and-out central defender on the books.
At least one centre half is required, but two are a must if one of McGuinness of Zatterstrom exit too.
