After beating Nottingham Forest in the Premier League over the weekend, Leeds United carried this momentum on by beating them once again in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Daniel Farke made a few changes to the starting XI, but it was still a strong side by all means.

Dan James thrived in a wing-back/winger hybrid role, with the 28-year-old opening the scoring before James Justin put the finishing touches on a 2-0 win.

Nico Elvedi thrived on his Leeds debut as well. The Swiss defender has potentially given Farke a selection headache going into our game against Brentford on Sunday.

Troy Deeney was on punditry duties for CBS for our cup tie last night. The former Watford striker made a sensational prediction regarding United for the current campaign.

Troy Deeney tips Leeds to become a “Premier League force”

On Monday Night Football this week, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville gave their predictions for the 2026/27 season, with both pundits seeming to agree that Leeds will comfortably finish mid-table.

Deeney also had his say regarding United following their latest win in the cup on CBS.

“They looked like they were going to be favourites for relegation last year but stayed up very comfortably,” Deeney said.

“They made some really notable acquisitions last year, and they’ve done that again this year with James Trafford, £40million, the most expensive British goalie of all time. That’s a big statement piece to say, right, we’re going to stay up, we’re trying to kick on.”

Deeney continued, “Having these cup runs allows them to rotate, get people fit, keep them fresh. Dan James, we know what he’s like; he’s been there for a little while now, but very, very good.

“Leeds look like they’re going to be a Premier League force for a little while now, but I don’t feel like they’re going to be in any relegation trouble at least for this season.”

To see Deeney seemingly do such a dramatic U-turn when speaking about Trafford was also amusing. Just last week, Deeney labelled Trafford “lightweight” and suggested he is very error-prone.

But now he seems to have finally realised what an exceptional signing he is for us. At least he’s recognised his mistake rather than doubling down on it.

Brentford will be a real test for Leeds this weekend

With Oliver Glasner at the helm, Forest are still a relatively unknown package for this season. Nobody really knows what to expect from them. So whilst our two wins over them are certainly impressive, we’ll have to wait and see just how well they age.

This is not the case for Brentford.

It’s fair to say most expect them to finish in the top half, perhaps even competing for Europe like they did last season.

In their opening Premier League game, they put down a real marker by dispatching Roberto De Zerbi’s new-look Tottenham side 3-0.

So to see how we deal with a team of that calibre will give us a good early indication of whether we are capable of pushing for a top-half finish ourselves.

But given how impressive Farke’s side have been so far this season, there’s no reason as to why we cannot target picking up at least a point against Brentford.
