Prime Minister Andy Burnham
Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited south Wales today to meet workers and apprentices to discuss jobs, reindustrialisation, and cost-of-living pressures.
The visit is Mr Burnham’s first official trip to Wales since taking office last month.
During the visit to Port Talbot, Mr Burnham confirmed he will meet First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth this autumn as part of an economic summit with the leaders of the devolved governments in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
The leaders will gather in October, alongside the Prime Minister, under the revived National Economic Council – a panel originally created during the 2008 financial crisis.
Speaking during his visit on Thursday August 27, Mr Burnham said: “The answers to the UK’s challenges will not come from an echo chamber. They will come from the places that know their own strengths, and from a government willing to listen and then act.
“Good jobs in every community, in every part of the UK. That is what I want every leader in this country signed up to.”
Stephen Kinnock, the secretary of state for Wales, welcomed Mr Burnham to the area and said: “The PM’s ambition to reindustrialise Wales and secure good growth and jobs in every postcode reflects Wales’s proud history and bright future as the backbone of British industry – from defence, to sustainable energy and advanced manufacturing.”
