Scottish music star Eddi Reader has thanked supporters for their messages following the death of her husband, musician John Douglas.

The Glasgow-born singer’s family shared the sad news on social media, revealing that Mr Douglas had died a few weeks ago following a short illness.

In a statement, they said he passed away surrounded by loved ones.

The post read: “A few weeks ago, Eddi’s husband, John Douglas, sadly passed away, surrounded by love.

“On behalf of Eddi and her family, we’d like to thank everyone who has reached out and shared messages, memories and kind words since John’s passing.

“Last Sunday, family and friends came together in Glasgow to celebrate his beautiful life, songs and stories.”

The family said the outpouring of support had brought “real comfort” during a difficult time.

Douglas was a respected musician and songwriter who frequently performed alongside Reader.

Reader, who was born in Glasgow, rose to fame as the lead singer of Fairground Attraction and is best known for the chart-topping hit Perfect .

“I have been a huge fan of Eddi and John has most certainly been there by her side at many, many concerts I have attended.

Another shared their own experience of loss, writing: “Hi Eddi don’t want to say – know what you are going thro – cos everyone’s grief is different.

“I lost my precious husband, also John, nearly 3 years ago and lost my Mum 3 weeks ago.

“My John still looks over me, sometimes very close and sometimes from a distance.

“Your family and music will get you through the dreadful loss. Sending love.”

A third tribute read: “It is such a shock to hear of John’s untimely passing.

“I enjoyed chatting to him on The Everyman Theatre in Cork after he played with Eddi and band earlier this year.

“My deepest condolences to Eddi and all John’s family on such a sad loss.”

The family said reading the messages and memories shared by fans has shown just how much Mr Douglas was loved and appreciated.

They added that the support has meant a great deal to Reader and her family as they come to terms with their loss.
