Leeds United are still needing to avoid relegation as the first objective in the Premier League this season. And, the promoted sides are showing ambition.

Leeds’ ambitious signings this summer have got many neutrals and plenty of the fanbase dreaming of pushing back into the top half this season.

However, it’s perhaps too soon to be getting ahead of ourselves, even with back-to-back wins to start the campaign.

Leeds United’s focus still has to be on staying in the Premier League this season

It all stems from that half-time switch at Man City. Our form in the Premier League since then is of a side that would qualify for Europe.

So, we’ve come into this season and got three points on the road. That’s something we only managed twice last term, which is more cause for optimism. Add to that successive clean sheets and there’s plenty of reason to think Leeds can push higher than 14th.

However, it’s hasty to suggest Leeds should be disregarding any notion that we will be in the relegation debate this season.

After all, it’s very clear from messaging out of the club and from Daniel Farke that Leeds want and need to survive before anything else this season.

Ipswich Town proving that Leeds United must be cautious with Premier League ambition

12 months ago, West Ham and Wolves will have been feeling relatively comfortable about their top-flight prospects after two successive years of woeful promoted teams.

Leeds and Sunderland took a sledgehammer to that ‘narrative’.

It’s quite clear that promoted teams who recruit well and are coached well will stand a chance. Ipswich Town (two years ago), Leicester City, Southampton, Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley were terrible additions, but that’s not the case this time around.

I do still think that the three promoted teams will end up going down. But, Ipswich’s business under Gary O’Neil has been very impressive and they stand a great chance.

The most recent signing is a huge statement: Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios joined for a reported £23.6million fee. That takes the Tractor Boys’ spending up to over £170million, breaking Sunderland’s record as the biggest-ever promoted spenders.

On top of that, they’ve had an instant impact from Paraguayan Julio Enciso, and a debut goal from Brazilian striker Emersonn.

Even though I still think the promoted three are going down, it won’t be a foregone conclusion. And, Ipswich’s business (on top of Hull City having a right go too), means it’s not a straightforward mission to cruise to safety.

Leeds have to get the job done, which we undoubtedly have the personnel and momentum to do.
