Sheffield United are in talks with Burnley over a loan deal to bring Joe Worrall to Bramall Lane, according to Ben Jacobs.
Sheffield United are focusing on loan and free-transfer additions as the club’s former and current owners continue to battle off the pitch. Chris Wilder is in desperate need of reinforcements, and with SUFC operating on a limited budget, Joe Worrall has emerged as a potential target.
Talks are now underway between the Blades and Burnley regarding Worrall, according to Ben Jacobs. Sheffield United are looking to bring in the experienced defender on a season-long loan.
Worrall has been an unused substitute in each of Burnley’s opening two Championship games. He did start their Carabao Cup victory over Notts County however.
A potential short-term fix to Sheffield United’s centre-back issues
Sheffield United are shrouded in uncertainty as the ownership issues rumble on. However, Wilder and his recruitment team will be determined to stay focused on the job at hand, particularly with further additions required if the Blades are to progress during the 2026/27 campaign.
The centre-back department is an intriguing situation. United currently have just four senior options in the position, with Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness, Jamal Baptiste and Nils Zatterstrom the players available to Wilder.
McGuinness and Zatterstrom have both been considered for exits, but the former has now been recalled amid the shortage of defensive options. Baptiste has provided cover following an encouraging pre-season, although there are understandable concerns about throwing him into the starting XI.
Ideally, United would sanction departures for both McGuinness and Zatterstrom, but they cannot afford to weaken their defensive options until reinforcements arrive. With the ongoing ownership uncertainty also restricting their transfer business, the Blades find themselves in a difficult position.
Bringing in Worrall is a good short-term fix to those problems and can contribute instantly for SUFC. However, you get the sense that the issues will be exactly the same next position this time next year.
The Verdict: Joe Worrall is a good pick-up for SUFC but they still need more
Worrall is a very strong loan addition for Sheffield United and comes with very little risk. However, they cannot afford to rest on their laurels in regards to additions, even with the limitations they have.

With the addition of Ben Brereton Diaz they have shown that they can still bring in quality even on loan. If Worrall is next through the door that makes three loan signings for SUFC so loan spots remain available.
With weakness’ still to be addressed throughout the Blades squad, they will likely be taken up by the end of the window. SUFC can still finish this disappointing window strongly.
