There’s no sign of Sonic Mania 2 happening anytime soon, but Sonic Team head Takazhi Iizuka has left the door open to the possibility.
Believe it or not, Sonic Mania is coming close to its tenth anniversary. The title launched in 2017 and many fans had hoped that we’d get a sequel. Sonic Mania was definitely a success for SEGA, but the company has not pursued a follow-up.
Right now there’s no word on a sequel happening in the immediate future. That said, Iizuka said in an interview with Game Informer this month that SEGA still has a great relationship with the Sonic Mania developers and “there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again”.
Iizuka said:
“We’re still really close with them. We’ve gone out eating and drinking with them because relationships are important to us. They also have a lot of projects that they’re working on for what they want to do and what their business needs are. We don’t have anything to talk about now, but there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again, and we think they could make a great game. It’s not off the books yet, but it’s not something that’s moving forward currently.”
