BBC drama Vigil finally returned for its third season on Sunday (30 August), with Suranne Jones’s Amy Silva and Rose Leslie’s Kirsten Longacre jetting off to a secluded base in the snow, where a murder threatens to kick off an international incident.
Just like the recently-returned cosy crime drama Ludwig, the BBC is experimenting with the release schedule, with episodes releasing at a different pace on BBC iPlayer compared to its broadcast on BBC One.
So, if you want to know when you can watch future instalments of the eagerly-awaited six-part season, or just to make sense of how it is being released overall, then read on to find out more!
When is Vigil season 3 airing on BBC One?

The latest season premiered over the weekend, with the first episode airing on BBC One at 9pm. The second episode follows tonight (31 August) at the same time, and the final four parts follow the same broadcasting pattern.

When is Vigil season 3 releasing on BBC iPlayer?

The streaming release on BBC iPlayer follows a different pattern, dropping in batches of two at 6am on Sundays. That means you can already watch the second episode before it airs on BBC One tonight.
It also means that the third and fourth parts will be available on iPlayer when you wake up on Sunday 6 September, and then you’ll have to wait another week for the remaining two instalments.
What did we say about Vigil season 3?
BBC
In Digital Spy‘s three-star review of the first three episodes, we wrote: “The show’s lip-nibbling suspense coupled with the ever-evolving mystery that shifts suspect-focus in a plausible and pleasing way easily compels you to crave the next episode.”
“Thankfully, Vigil treats viewers to a six-episode season, so there’s plenty of taut action to get stuck into over the coming weeks,” we added, while also noting that it “slow-burns into a twisty mystery”.
Vigil season 3 is airing on Sunday and Monday nights at 9pm on BBC One. Episodes drop two at a time on Sunday mornings on BBC iPlayer.
