After a summer full of change, the 49ers have finally sorted out the goalkeeping department at Leeds United.

Alex Cairns was handed a contract extension to remain at the club as third choice. Both Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier left on free transfers.

James Trafford was then brought in to be the club’s new number one for a club record £40million.

After plenty of speculation regarding his future, Lucas Perri left United to join Torino on loan after just one year in West Yorkshire. The Whites finally confirmed the signing of Michael Zetterer from Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend to replace him.

The German shot-stopper has signed for a fee believed to be in the region of around £4.3million. So, when could United supporters see Zetterer in action for the first time?

Michael Zetterer could make Leeds debut against Chelsea

It goes without saying because of the form he has showcased so far at Leeds as well as the fee he arrived for, but Trafford is our undisputed first-choice ‘keeper.

Only an injury or a monumental dip in form could ever change this.

Perhaps this is why Zetterer seemed reluctant to join Leeds at first. Reports emerged stating that the 31-year-old was content to stay at Frankfurt to fight to be their number one. But for one reason or another, Zetterer’s stance changed.

Because of our lack of quality goalkeeping depth, Trafford remained in between the sticks for the second round of our Carabao Cup tie against Nottingham Forest last week. The Englishman kept a clean sheet in the process as we booked our place in the third round.

We play Chelsea next in the third round of the competition, and this is where we could see Zetterer in action for the first time.

Next Saturday we make the trip down to take on Brighton in the Premier League. However, the following Wednesday, 9 September, we play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the cup, where we will more than likely see our new shot-stopper in action for the first time.

Daniel Farke should not be afraid to play James Trafford in the cups too

Last season, our FA Cup run was one of the highlights of the campaign as we made it to Wembley. Ultimately, we came up short against Chelsea in the semi-final.

If we begin to progress deep in either the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup, Farke should not hesitate to drop Zetterer to play Trafford in these games, especially if it looks like we have a real chance of winning silverware.

To be honest, I couldn’t really care less if this annoys Zetterer. He didn’t seem keen to join us in the first place, and with Trafford, we have one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

He could make the difference for us in some of these big cup games and help get us over the line.

I’d even be tempted to play him against Chelsea. However, I know this is extremely unlikely as Farke will want to give Zetterer a run-out.
