According to BBC News, interim head coach Marcus Trescothick believes comparisons can be made between England’s new pace attack and the seam quartet that helped win the Ashes in 2005.
Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue have formed England’s frontline group following Ben Stokes’ retirement. The four bowlers helped the hosts secure successive Test victories over Pakistan and their first series win since 2024.
Trescothick, who was part of the 2005 England side, said the current bowlers had complementary skills similar to Stephen Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff. He highlighted the variety in the attack, with Archer, Tongue and Atkinson able to bowl at high speed while Robinson offers accuracy and movement.
Robinson has taken 23 wickets this summer at an average of 8.3 after returning from more than two years out of Test cricket. England have selected four frontline seamers without a specialist spinner, with Dan Lawrence available to bowl part-time off-breaks.
England will seek a 3-0 series sweep in the third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston, starting on 9 September. Trescothick said the priority was to field the most consistent side possible, while the fitness of the current attack will be assessed before a squad is confirmed for the finale.
