Extension proposals at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor aim to support the provision of healthcare and training facilities. A planning application has been received by Cyngor Gwynedd over work proposed at the hospital.
The plans, submitted by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, concern a first-floor rooftop extension to provide additional teaching and office accommodation.
It also proposes internal alterations including enhanced library facilities, study areas, a new reception area and a student common room, as well as private office space.
The existing library will also be reconfigured to create “an improved” library area, quiet rooms for study and meetings, a library office and associated storage.
Further internal works will include the formation of a new reception area and alterations to the existing office accommodation, and will include new finishes.
The scheme proposes a dedicated student common room, with lockers and a refreshments area, to provide an informal space for students to use between periods of study and work.
The plans say: “The proposed first-floor extension will provide additional teaching classrooms and new office accommodation.
“Internally, the existing library will be reconfigured to improve its functionality and usability, while several existing offices will be relocated and reorganised to create a more efficient and suitable layout.”
The plans note that no works at the hospital are to be carried out at ground floor level.
“The site is currently existing roof space to the ground floor,” the plans say.
They describe how the proposed extension has been “designed to respond to the contemporary character of the adjacent hospital buildings”.
The plans added: “Insulated metal cladding panels are proposed for the external elevations, providing a finish that complements and matches the appearance of the adjoining-built form.
“The new extension will be finished with a flat roof, consistent with the surrounding hospital campus.”
The details also note that the proposal will “enhance existing facilities at the hospital through the provision of additional teaching accommodation, office space and improved library facilities”.
They added: “These improvements will support the continued delivery of healthcare training and services, strengthening an important community facility.”
The application notes that Ysbyty Gwynedd is “a key healthcare facility” serving Bangor, Gwynedd and the wider North Wales region and provides “a broad range” of acute and specialist medical services.
The proposed Medical Education Centre will support the continued delivery and development of these services by enhancing education, training and professional development opportunities for healthcare staff and students.
