A dad who lost his job last year has won the right to follow his passion for baking by setting up a street-trading van selling home-made treats and artisan cheese toasties at Bradley Stoke’s trading estate.
Jason Fish was granted a licence by South Gloucestershire councillors for his business Baked and Bearded, Gourmet Bites, to sell hot and cold food at Great Park Road, near the junction with Woodlands Lane, from 7am to 2pm weekdays.
His application prompted an objection from a local resident who said the van would make existing congestion worse and endanger public safety, especially during rush hour, as the road was used by lorries and buses and that vehicles were parked on the roadside, reducing traffic to one lane near a bus stop.
The objector was also concerned about the potential for loitering and antisocial behaviour.
But none of the authorities, including the police, the council’s highways team and public health, opposed the licensing sub-committee approving a static street-trading consent.
Bradley Stoke Town Council also had no objection.

Mr Fish told the panel on Tuesday, May 20, that the road was fairly long and straight and the existing parking did allow two-way traffic.
He said: “My trailer is relatively small, it’s only six metres in length, comparable to a small van – it’s not one of those big grotesque massive ones.
“The objection raised concerns about traffic flow during rush hour, so in the mornings I will be on the outbound side of the estate which will enable traffic flow into the estate.
“In the evening rush hour I don’t plan to be trading, so that should ease some worries about the operation during peak times.
“There is ample enough space for traffic to get past.”
He said his customers would be mainly staff at the business park who would walk to the van and take their lunch back to the office.
Mr Fish said: “There is no seating or music to encourage people to loiter.
“This is my first venture into food trading.
“I’m a passionate baker. I’ve been baking cakes for my children for years.
“I was made redundant last year, I was working in telecoms, so I decided to try to set up my own business.
“Ultimately this is a means to try to get my product out there and hopefully scale up in the future.
“I wish to be a responsible business.
“I live in the area, I want to be a benefit to it, not a problem for it.”
