Leeds United’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign continued over the weekend as the Whites drew 1-1 with Brighton at the Amex.

After going 1-0 up through Jayden Bogle, United should’ve capitalised on their dominance. However, Anton Stach and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were among those who missed big chances that ultimately came back to bite Leeds.

In the second half, we lost control of the game, and Brighton eventually found an equaliser when Luka Vuskovic headed home from close range in the 71st minute.

When Noah Okafor was subbed off just after the hour mark, Brenden Aaronson was the one who replaced him. However, many Leeds fans, including myself, thought Farke should’ve subbed on Jean-Matteo Bahoya instead.

So with United taking on Chelsea in midweek in the Carabao Cup third round, it would make sense for Bahoya to be handed his first start for the club.

Jean-Matteo Bahoya should start against Chelsea

When Okafor was subbed off against Brighton, it instantly looked like we dropped another five yards deeper. Predictably, this invited more pressure from the home side before the equaliser.

In many ways, the game was similar to that England v Argentina World Cup semi-final over the summer.

Bahoya was the pacy outlet we needed on the left to ensure we were still a threat against Brighton. Ultimately, not subbing Bahoya on proved to be a mistake. Aaronson was not all that effective when he came on.

The American only attempted one dribble, which was unsuccessful. He also only won three of the seven duels he was involved in and lost possession five times. (Sofascore)

Perhaps Farke felt it was too early to throw on the young Frenchman after he only signed for the club on deadline day last week.

But with Bahoya potentially costing us £25.7million if he makes a certain number of appearances, he cannot just be a player on the fringes of the squad.

The Brighton game proved we need him now. So if Farke feels as if he’s still not up to speed, he needs to get him there ASAP.

The game against Chelsea in the cup in midweek is an opportunity to start the 21-year-old.

Melvin Bard should also start against Chelsea

It was encouraging to see Gabriel Gudmundsson start his first Premier League game of the season as the Swede returned from injury.

Overall, I thought he played well for the most part. However, he did lose Vuskovic from the corner, which resulted in Brighton’s equaliser.

Melvin Bard was signed on deadline day to provide left-footed cover and competition for Gudmundsson. It would make a lot of sense to start Bard against Chelsea to help him get up to speed. Like with Bahoya. That way Farke would feel comfortable enough to rely on the pair in the Premier League.

Even if he only plays 60 minutes, for example, before Gudmundsson replaces him, as he continues to build his own match fitness, it would be nice if we got to see both Bard and Bahoya in action in mid-week.
