1. Please introduce yourself, your name, role, organisation, and a brief overview of your career journey.
I have worked within Birmingham’s professional and financial services community since the early 1970’s, building a career that has spanned more than five decades.
In particular, I was the co-founder chairman and chief executive of Birmingham Forward, which led to the creation of Birmingham Forward, from which emerged the concept of the BYPY Awards in 1990, with which I was closely involved. I have been a judge (and once Chairman of the Judges) on a number of occasions, and was honoured to win the ‘Most Inspiring Business Leader’ in 2004.
2. What inspired you to pursue your current role and area of expertise?
I’ve always enjoyed solving problems and helping people make confident decisions.
Professional and Financial services are often seen as being about numbers and outcomes, but in reality it’s about understanding people, earning their trust and helping them navigate important moments in their lives or businesses.
3. How did you find the judging experience this year, and what stood out to you about the process?
It was genuinely inspiring.
Reading through the nominations reminded me just how much exceptional talent we have across Greater Birmingham. What stood out wasn’t simply individual achievement, but the generosity and understanding people showed towards colleagues, clients and their wider communities.
The standard was incredibly high, which made judging both rewarding and extremely difficult. Behind every application was a story of determination, resilience and ambition, and it was a privilege to be part of recognising that.
4. What qualities do you believe set outstanding individuals apart in today’s workplace?
Technical ability is clearly important, but it only takes someone so far.
The people who really stand out are those who are curious, dependable and willing to listen and keep learning. They treat others with respect and remain calm when things become challenging.
Perhaps most importantly, they inspire, support and encourage those around them. The best professionals don’t just focus on their own success, they help create success for others.
5. What does success look like for a young professional at the start of their career?
Success isn’t about having all the answers straight away.
It’s about being willing to ask challenging questions, embracing opportunities, learning from mistakes and building a reputation for being someone people can trust.
Careers are marathons rather than sprints. The young professionals who thrive are usually those who stay curious, remain humble and never lose their enthusiasm to improve.
6. Why do you think recognising and celebrating young professional talent across Greater Birmingham is important?
Greater Birmingham has always been a city built on enterprise, innovation and ambition. Our future depends on the next generation feeling valued, encouraged and inspired to stay and build their careers here.
Recognition gives people confidence. It acknowledges hard work that often goes unnoticed and reminds young professionals that their contribution matters.
Celebrating success also sends a powerful message that this region is full of opportunity and that young talent can flourish here.
7. What was particularly impressive about the nominees in the Apprenticeship category?
What impressed me most was the breadth of talent.
The nominees demonstrated not only excellent technical ability but also emotional intelligence, leadership and a genuine desire to make a positive difference. Many had gone well beyond what might reasonably be expected at this stage of their careers.
It was encouraging to see so many individuals who combine professional excellence with kindness, integrity and a commitment to supporting others.
