Prince William is reportedly keeping his distance as Prince Harry settles back into life in Britain with Meghan Markle, with those close to the royal family suggesting the brothers are nowhere near a reconciliation.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold told Us Weekly on Wednesday, September 9, that William, 44, remains wary of Harry’s intentions following years of tension.
“William will be watching his brother very closely and trying to work out what his game plan is,” Harrold said.
He added, “I don’t believe he’s happy Harry is back in the U.K. at all.”
Harry, 41, Meghan, 45, and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, returned to Britain after spending six years in California. They are living in a non-royal residence and reportedly exploring homes in the Cotswolds.
This update comes just days after the palace publicly clarified Harry and Meghan’s status following their return to Britain.
As Star previously reported, a palace office told the BBC on September 7 that the couple remain non-working royals and are in the U.K. as “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
The statement reinforced that their move back has not restored any official royal role, adding another layer of scrutiny to how William and other senior royals are approaching Harry’s return.

Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 before moving to California.
The relationship between the couple and the royal family grew more strained in the years that followed, particularly after their 2021 tell-all interview and Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare.
For now, as the royal family navigates Harry and Meghan’s big move, the couple remains in Britain as private citizens rather than working members of the royal family.
