School leaders in Birmingham approve more funding for schools during the next fiscal year.

The Birmingham City Schools Board of Education approved a $544.97 million budget for fiscal year 2027, which is an increase of more than $63 million from the previous year.

“This budget represented an important investment in the future of Birmingham City Schools and, most importantly, the future of our scholars,” said Superintendent Mark Sullivan. “We were intentional about directing resources toward teaching and learning, supporting our employees, strengthening our schools and creating opportunities that prepared our students for college, careers and life.”

The budget includes two locally funded personal leave days, a $3,500 allowance for special education teachers, and sign-on bonuses for critical positions.

The school board also budgeted $77.8 million for capital projects.

Other investments include summer and after-school programs and funding for school safety and security cameras.

“Our responsibility was not simply to fund another school year,” Sullivan said. “It was to make strategic investments that had a lasting impact on our scholars, our employees and our community.”
