Rangers fans have been warned they may be waiting for a new manager until next week at the earliest – as the clamour for confirmation of Steven Gerrard’s second coming reaches fever pitch.

Record Sport revealed on Tuesday that the former Ibrox boss has asked for time to talk the move through with his wife and family as speculation mounts that he’s on the brink of a second term in the hotseat.

But that came against the noisy backdrop of rampant speculation with some bookmakers refusing to take any more bets on the Liverpool and England legend being announced as Philippe Clement’s replacement.

But sources at the club insist that no agreement is imminent and remain adamant that incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson of the San Francisco 49ers – who are leading the chase for a new boss – have yet to select a preferred candidate for the position.

The club’s hierarchy is sticking firmly to the party line that no offers have been made to any of the men who have been spoken to by Thelwell and Steinsson and, furthermore, that no agreement is expected to be thrashed out before the end of this week.

Rumours continue to swirl around Glasgow about the timing of Gerrard’s potential return, with claims that he may already be in the country preparing to be unveiled.

But yesterday came and went without any sign of the 44-year-old touching down on Scottish soil after we revealed that he is facing a major task in persuading his wife Alex to leave the luxury trappings of the Middle East behind.

The couple are believed to be happy and settled in their £10k a week mansion in Bahrain and friends of Gerrard suspect any decision on his future may centre around lifestyle choices.

Davide Ancelotti is another potential front runner even though the Italian is expected to join his dad in South America for Brazil’s World Cup double header against Ecuador and Paraguay – and despite all manner of leaks in Madrid claiming his move to Scotland was already signed and sealed last week.

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin has also been spoken to but reports from down south insist the ex-Scotland defender is now on the verge of agreeing to take over from Ruud van Nistlerooy to lead Leicester City’s push back towards the Premier League next season.
