LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A husband and wife in London, Kentucky, were badly injured when an EF4 tornado tore through their home, each losing an arm.
The home of Gail and Paul Cline is now a twisted mess. Glass and insulation cover walls and floors, providing a glimpse at the terrifying moments the couple endured while trapped inside while the tornado hit.
They were rescued when someone in the neighborhood looking for survivors heard Gail Cline’s screams.
“In this bedroom, and you can see where stuff came through. This is where they were, and the neighbor came, he heard them screaming for help. So he came to help them and he pulled them out into the hallway there,” Brandy Bowman, niece of the Clines, said.
The couple was taken to London Hospital, where they remain after they each lost an arm in the storm.
“The doctors said where they lost opposite arms is because they were holding each other,” Taylor Baker, another niece of the couple, said.
Family members said Gail Cine is on life support after being put under a medically-induced coma after also suffering from fragments in her ribs that punctured her lungs. Paul Cline’s condition has improved, but is having a hard time processing what happened as he suffers from dementia.
The family told our partners at LEX 18 News the home has been in the Cline family for generations.
The EF4 tornado with 170 mph winds killed 19 people and leveled neighborhoods across three Kentucky counties Friday night. The NWS office in Jackson, Kentucky, confirmed through a multi-day survey the tornado was 1,700 yards wide at its peak — nearly 1 mile — and was on the ground for more than 55 miles from Somerset to London.
