Edinburgh’s latest student residential proposal has entered the consultation process with views being sought on a purpose-built development at 36 Russell Road.
Ardent Group has teamed up with 7N Architects to take on the brownfield in a pocket of light industry to the west of the city, spurred by new active travel connections to the isolated site.
Tucked away behind railway infrastructure the plans introduce an active street frontage and have been conceived with future development in mind, permitting coordinated development of neighbouring plots.
In a consultation statement, 7N wrote: “We are currently refining the building’s massing and developing the building’s façades. The building’s proposed material palette has taken references from the local context which is primarily of a brick and metal industrial vernacular. In particular we have taken influence from profiled colourful metalwork and glazed tiles found on the bridges along Russell Road.”
The L-plan block would frame a south-facing amenity space incorporating swales and rain gardens and is projected to commence on site by January 2027, approvals permitting.
