A crash on the M4 yesterday (Wednesday, May 21) which caused hours of traffic chaos resulted in one person being sent to hospital.

A three vehicle crash was reported just after 5pm yesterday on the eastbound carriageway of the M4, near Bristol.

The crash was located on junction 19, the entrance to the M32.

It was reported by National Highways that the crash had involved five vehicles, including one electric vehicle.

However, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said three vehicles were involved.

The incident was attended by the ambulance service.

One person was taken to hospital, the extent of their injuries are not yet known.

Another person was seen by paramedics at the scene.

Three lanes were initially closed as a result of the crash, but at 8pm the incident had cleared.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Officers were called to a three-vehicle collision on the M4 eastbound carriageway at the junction with the M32 yesterday (Wednesday, May 21).

“One person was taken to hospital and another was seen by paramedics.

“Three out of four lanes were initially closed but have since reopened.”

National Highways, at the time, described the recovery process as complex, due to the nature of the crash, and vehicles were being diverted via the slip roads around the crash in an ‘up and over closure’.

There were delays of up to 60 minutes and tailbacks of four miles.
