MATTAWA — A wildfire that broke out Wednesday evening near the Wanapum Dam north of Mattawa scorched up to 60 acres and disrupted internet service in the region before being brought under control.
The Wanapum Fire was first reported around 6:40 p.m. and quickly grew to 40 to 50 acres, fueled by dry brush, grass, and wind. The blaze, burning in an isolated area, did not threaten any homes but damaged fiber infrastructure, knocking out internet access in Mattawa and Desert Aire.
By Thursday morning, shifting winds pushed the flames at least another 10 acres. Fire crews responded quickly and successfully re-contained the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
