According to data released by the Mizoram Tourism Department, a total of 469,753 tourists visited the state between April 2024 and February 2025. This represents a staggering 114.38% rise from the 219,114 visitors in the 2023–2024 period. Of the total visitors, 464,742 were domestic tourists, while 5,011 came from international destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Germany. The tourism department is still in the process of compiling data for March 2025, and officials anticipate that the final figures will reflect an even higher increase in footfall. The surge in tourism can be attributed to several key factors, ranging from enhanced connectivity and aggressive promotion to improvements in infrastructure and better data collection systems.
The department has worked relentlessly on promoting the state’s tourism potential through various fairs, exhibitions, and international collaborations. As a result, the number of people visiting Mizoram for business-related purposes has grown significantly. However, a growing number of tourists are also drawn by the state’s natural beauty and cultural richness, including its lush green landscapes, scenic trekking trails, and unique heritage. Following the appointment of an Inspector of Statistics, a more structured and efficient data gathering system has been put in place. The department now collects data from four key sources: accommodation facilities such as hotels, homestays, and lodges; entry and exit points, including the Inner Line Permit (ILP) stations at Bairabi, Vairengte, Kanhmun, and Lengpui Airport; security agencies’ records on foreign arrivals; and ticketed tourist destinations. This comprehensive data collection process has ensured a more accurate reflection of the number of tourists visiting the state.
Moreover, local domestic tourism has also seen a significant rise. Residents within Mizoram, who traditionally would not have been categorized as tourists, are increasingly exploring other parts of the state. This growing interest in local travel suggests that Mizoram’s attractions are becoming more widely appreciated by its own people, which further contributes to the overall tourism numbers.
While the surge in visitor numbers is a promising development for the state, it has also presented certain challenges. The increased influx of tourists has led to a shortage of trained professionals such as tour guides and travel operators. To meet the rising demand, tourism officials have acknowledged the need for immediate investments in capacity building. The government is now focused on setting up training programs to equip locals with the necessary skills to cater to the growing number of tourists.
