Saturday, May 24, 2025
Delta Air Lines has significantly expanded its international footprint from Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) by introducing two new seasonal nonstop routes connecting the city to Rome, Italy, and Copenhagen, Denmark. This move represents a strategic enhancement of MSP’s transatlantic network and marks the airport’s first-ever nonstop service to Copenhagen, a major European capital and important business hub. The addition of these routes underscores the growing demand for direct international travel options from the Upper Midwest and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen global connectivity. The flights to Copenhagen launched on May twenty-second, with service to Rome beginning the following day, May twenty-third. Both routes are scheduled to operate seasonally through the fall, offering travelers expanded access to Europe during peak travel months.
With these new additions, Delta now operates nonstop flights from Minneapolis to eight European destinations, significantly enhancing the airport’s international profile. Across all carriers, MSP currently provides nonstop service to thirty-five cities worldwide, representing its highest count to date.
Flight Schedule and Aircraft Information
Operating out of Terminal 1, these flights employ Airbus A330-300 aircraft equipped with multiple cabin classes, ranging from the luxurious Delta One suites and Premium Select to Comfort+ and standard Main Cabin seating, designed to accommodate a wide variety of passenger preferences.
The Copenhagen route operates three times weekly, with departures from Minneapolis on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6:40 PM, arriving in Copenhagen the following morning at 10:05 AM local time. Return flights depart Copenhagen on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 12:20 PM, arriving in Minneapolis at 2:30 PM.
The route to Rome operates four times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays—with departures from Minneapolis scheduled at 8:10 PM and arrivals in Rome at 12:45 PM the following day. The return journey departs Rome at 2:55 PM and touches down in Minneapolis at 6:33 PM the same day.
Enhancing Minneapolis’s Role as a Global Travel Hub
The Minneapolis–St. Paul airport has steadily expanded its international footprint, becoming a major gateway for global travel in the Upper Midwest. The introduction of nonstop flights to Rome and Copenhagen complements existing European connections to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Reykjavík.
In 2024, MSP welcomed a record-breaking 3.57 million international passengers, representing an increase of nearly twenty percent compared to the prior year. This surge marked the airport’s first full recovery to pre-pandemic international traffic levels. The airport served one hundred sixty-three nonstop destinations overall in 2024, an increase from one hundred fifty-six in 2023. Daily departing seat capacity rose 6.7 percent to approximately 60,644 seats.
Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport currently offers nonstop service to thirty-five international cities spanning over twenty countries, surpassing its previous record of thirty-two destinations. Recent key additions include the launch of year-round flights to Frankfurt and the return of Dublin routes after a multi-year pause. The airport expects continued expansion in global travel demand through 2025.
Delta’s Integral Role in Minneapolis’s International Expansion
Delta Air Lines controls about seventy percent of the market at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport and has been instrumental in expanding its international connections. The airline recently restored nonstop flights to Tokyo Haneda and launched new long-distance routes to cities such as Dublin and Sicily.
Alongside its European and Asian routes, Delta operates an extensive network from MSP to key cities across Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. These destinations include Calgary, Mexico City, Tulum, San Juan, Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, Punta Cana, Nassau, Cozumel, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Saint Maarten, Aruba, and Guanacaste.
To meet rising demand, Delta has increased capacity by deploying widebody aircraft like the Airbus A330 and A350 on its major international routes. This growth contributed to MSP handling 37.2 million total passengers in 2024, with international traffic increasing by twenty percent year-over-year.
