The Prince and Princess of Wales once enjoyed a five-course meal prepared by Michelin-star chefs at a charity gala dinner in 2016 where Prince William was not afraid to poke fun at his wife’s cooking skills. The gala dinner the couple supported at the time was the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices – of which Princess Kate has been patron of since 2012.
When the pair arrived at the event, Kate joked that William was looking forward to having a break from her cooking. She said: “William has to put up with my cooking most of the time.” To which William laughed with a savage six-word response: “It’s the reason I’m so skinny!”
It is not the first time the couple have joked about their cooking abilities as the Prince and Princess appeared in the BBC1 show in 2019 titled A Berry Royal Christmas alongside Dame Mary Berry, 89, and Great British Bake Off series six winner Nadiya Hussain.
The couple were paired off, William went with Nadiya and Kate went with Mary and it became a competition to see who could roll and decorate the best Christmas roulade.
At the time, William joked: “I’ve made hundreds of roulades, loads. I’m going to write a book about roulades and it’ll be a bestseller.”
It was during this television airing, that Kate confessed William had cooked for her during their time studying at the University of St Andrews. The Princess said: “He’s [Prince William] very good at breakfast. University days, he used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that was when he was trying to impress me, Mary! Things like Bolognese sauce and things like that.”
In true British Bake Off form, Berry displayed her classic humour and cheeky innuendos when she asked Princess Kate if she wanted to have a “squirt on a cake” while preparing cupcakes for their guests – which, of course, sent the Prince and Princess into hysterics.
In March 2025, Prince William surprised the culinary expert with a birthday message as she appeared on the BBC‘s The One Show in a special episode celebrating her 90th birthday.
Berry was played a series of birthday messages from famous friends, kicking off with a message from Prince William, leaving the baking guru stunned.
“I want to wish you a very happy 90th birthday,” Prince William said in a selfie-style video. “You are a true national treasure, and we’ve loved working with you over the years. Have a fantastic day today.”
He then joked, “I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticism they might get, but good luck and I hope it goes really well.”
