South Wales Police has launched an investigation after a 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead on Friday evening at Barry Island Pleasure Park. A statement from the force late on Friday night said the youngster suffered what they have described as a “medical episode” at the park just before 5pm.

Multiple police cars, ambulances and a helicopter from Wales Air Ambulance was filmed landed at the scene on Friday evening just after 5.30pm. Police are appealing for anyone who was at Barry Island Pleasure Park at the time, to come forward with any information.

A spokesperson for the park has confirmed they will be open on Saturday from 11am.

The park said in a statement today: “Very sad news yesterday all of our team did their best to assist the emergency services but unfortunately the boy suffered a medical emergency and couldn’t be saved.

“”Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time. Park remains open this morning 11m as usual.”

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “We were called just before 5pm this evening, Friday May 23, with a report of a 16-year-old teenage boy suffering a medical episode in Barry Island Pleasure Park.

“Despite efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances of the death.

“Anyone who was in Barry Island Pleasure Park around the time of the incident that may have information that could assist our investigation is asked to contact us by one of the following means quoting 2500163611.”

The sunny Friday evening marked the start of the school half term holidays and the park was busy with people at the time of the incident.

Hundreds of tributes have already been left online. One said: “Thinking of you all, life is so cruel. RIP young man.” Another said: “South Wales Police and all the emergency services thank U for trying to save this young boys life feel for this family.”
