Two men have been charged with murder and conspiracy to rob following the death of an 83-year-old man in Birmingham.

Police said Neil O’Donnell was hospitalised after being assaulted with a screwdriver on Cateswell Road, Hall Green, at around 2.30pm on May 14.

Mr O’Donnell suffered an arm injury.

He was later discharged from hospital before being re-admitted on May 17.

He died four days later on May 21.

Wesley McDonnell, 46, of College Road, Moseley, and Tony Griffin, 54, of Mill View, Birmingham, were arrested the following day.

They were later charged with murder and conspiracy to rob and were remanded in custody.

The pair will appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today, May 24.

Det Insp Nigel Box of West Midlands Police said: “Our thoughts are with Mr O’Donnell’s family today.

“We are continuing to offer them all the support we can.

“They have asked for their privacy to be respected as they come to terms with their loss.”
