Birmingham City Council has issued an urgent warning to residents as bin trucks resume their rounds.

For the first time in weeks, refuse lorries have been managing to leave their depots and empty wheelie bins as the strike continues.

Some desperate residents have taken to following the trucks clutching black bin bags at the crews in the hope they will not forget to take their mounting waste away.

The council is telling householders not to follow the 26 ton trucks on safety grounds.

They posted on X: “Residents – if you see one of our bin trucks drive down your street, please don’t follow them, there is a risk to your health and safety.

“Put your rubbish in or next to your wheelie bin outside your property or at your usual collection point.”

Residents came out to lend their support and hand over their rubbish as bin crews drove down Carlton Road in Bordesley Green, on March 28.

“They’re legends” says one man as he points to the crew, who smiled and waved back.

Carlton Road resident Raheela Kausar said: “The binmen are really good and they deserve a rise.

“I don’t like coming to this side where Grove Cottage Road is because someone is always fly-tipping stuff.

“People should not be throwing their rubbish outside.

“We have to do our bit too, we have to take pride in where we live.

“I pick up other people’s rubbish and if you fly-tip, you should get a fine.”

Birmingham’s full out bin strike started on March 11, although there was disruption for weeks before that as workers took to picket lines.
