In value terms, toluene production reached $214M in 2024 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 5%. The level of production peaked in 2024 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Production By Country
Algeria (124K tons) remains the largest toluene producing country in Africa, accounting for 53% of total volume. Moreover, toluene production in Algeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (62K tons), twofold. Congo (22K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.2% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume in Algeria totaled +2.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+3.6% per year) and Congo (+2.9% per year).
ImportsAfrica’s Imports of Toluene
In 2024, supplies from abroad of toluene decreased by -2.3% to 69K tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 77K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, toluene imports dropped slightly to $94M in 2024. In general, imports, however, showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $94M in 2023, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Imports By Country
In 2024, South Africa (18K tons) and Nigeria (18K tons) represented the largest importers of toluene in Africa, together constituting 53% of total imports. Morocco (8.9K tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Cote d’Ivoire (9.7%) and Kenya (5%). The following importers – Egypt (2.7K tons) and Tunisia (1.8K tons) – together made up 6.5% of total imports.

Import Prices By Country
In 2024, the import price in Africa amounted to $1,364 per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($1,652 per ton), while Egypt ($1,010 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
ExportsAfrica’s Exports of Toluene
In 2024, overseas shipments of toluene decreased by -2.7% to 7.3K tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eleven-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 7.6K tons in 2023, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
In value terms, toluene exports expanded notably to $1.9M in 2024. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $2.9M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
Algeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for 6.8K tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2024. It was distantly followed by South Africa (415 tons), achieving a 5.6% share of total exports.
Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the toluene exports, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, South Africa (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Algeria (+9.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2013-2024, the share of South Africa (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Algeria ($1.3M) remains the largest toluene supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($468K), with a 24% share of total exports.
In Algeria, toluene exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2013-2024.
Export Prices By Country
In 2024, the export price in Africa amounted to $263 per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $1,044 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($1,127 per ton), while Algeria stood at $195 per ton.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.3%).
