European gas prices have maintained their elevated levels, staying above EUR35/MWh from May 15 to 22. According to GMK Center, the market’s reaction was influenced by stalled peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and forecasts predicting colder than usual temperatures in northwestern Europe starting May 22. On May 20, TTF futures prices reached EUR36.97/MWh, marking the highest point in a month as reported by ICE. Market anxieties were further fueled by disruptions in Norwegian gas exports, particularly due to an unexpected shutdown at the Kollsnes processing plant and a prolonged outage at the Troll field, both crucial to the EU’s gas supply. Once Kollsnes resumed operations, there was some alleviation in market tension, especially in the Dutch and British sectors.

Meanwhile, TradingView has observed a shift in LNG supplies from Asia due to weak demand, though emerging markets such as Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines are poised to absorb more significant volumes soon. EU gas storage facilities were reported to be 45.3% full, a notable decrease compared to 67.5% on the same date in 2024, according to the AGSI platform. The Financial Times highlights that replenishing these reserves after a harsh winter will incur an additional EUR10 billion expense this year, with a target of reaching 90% storage capacity by November costing EUR26 billion, compared to EUR16 billion for 99% capacity last year.

The European electricity market has also felt the impact of fluctuating gas prices. In April, Dutch TTF futures prices fell from EUR42.65/MWh at the start of the month to EUR32.3/MWh by the end, driven by several factors including a stronger euro against the dollar amid financial market volatility spurred by US tariffs. Additionally, the tariffs imposed by Trump led to reduced LNG demand in China, providing some relief to European buyers. Germany’s decision to relax its fuel injection targets into gas storage facilities contributed to this price shift.
