A major road in Walsall was closed this morning as firefighters battled a huge house fire.

The blaze broke out at a property on Broadway at around 4.30am today, May 25.

At least five fire crews rushed to the scene.

Locals were warned to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area where possible.

Broadway was closed in both directions for several hours but has since reopened.

Firefighters were continuing to damp down hot spots in a bid to fully extinguish the blaze at 9am today.

West Midlands Fire Service wrote on social media platform X at 6am: “We have five appliances and a hydraulic platform in attendance at an incident on Broadway, Walsall involving a property fire.

“All residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed.

“There is a total road closure in both directions of the carriageway on Broadway.”

It later added: “Crews have been working hard to extinguish the fire.

“Damping down of hot spots continues, and the incident has been scaled down to two appliances and a hydraulic platform.

“Broadway, Walsall has now been reopened.”

Fire control told BirminghamLive that the fire service was first called to the scene at 4.30am.

It was unable to confirm the cause of the blaze at this time.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service added: “We have 5 crews and a Hydraulic Platform in attendance at Broadway, Walsall, where they have responded to a property fire.

“Please avoid the area, where possible.”
