A charity is begging the public to stop filling up cemetery bins with household waste.

The Friends of Brandwood Cemetery say people are bringing their rubbish and stuffing them into bins within the site instead of taking it to the tip.

As a result, the wire bins are stuffed with “boxes of bottles, bags of cans and piles of pizza boxes.”

The volunteer run group said the bins were emptied by cemetery staff who were also waiting for collections like everyone else.

They posted on Facebook: “Stop dumping your rubbish household in cemetery bins.

“We all know that the bin strikes are impacting us but bringing your boxes of bottles, bags of cans and piles of pizza boxes to the cemetery and popping them in the wire bins is not acceptable.

“The cemetery ground staff have to empty those bins themselves and are also in the queue for collections.

“I doubt anyone on this Facebook page would be that disrespectful but should anyone you know think this is acceptable… please dissuade them. Thank you.”

The Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery looks after ‘the restoration, conservation and respectful enjoyment of Brandwood End Cemetery and Chapels.’

This includes the monuments, buildings, records, green spaces, adjacent pool and allotments and overall environment.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City Council has been granted a court order which will stop bin lorries from being blocked from leaving waste depots – at least temporarily.

The interim injunction is said to ensure that picketing and protests at the authority’s three depots – located in Perry Barr, Kings Norton and Tyseley – will be in line with the law.
