Social Services have been contacted after a man allegedly drove at 120mph in a car with a smashed windscreen, with children inside.

Police have said that the children, aged 5 and 15, were put at risk during the incident on Sunday evening in the Newry area.

A PSNI spokesperson shared details of the incident in a post on the NI Road Policing and Safety social media account.

“The driver failed to stop for Road Policing Officers from Mahon Road on the Armagh Road in Newry and a pursuit ensued,” read the post.

“The driver overtook vehicles at speed, before driving up to 120mph on the A1 carriageway.

“Officers from Ardmore Station successfully stung the vehicle’s tyres but the driver drove on, before decamping from the vehicle and running away.

“He was located hiding in bushes.”

The spokesperson added that the driver was arrested on for dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and for having no driving licence and no insurance.

Police added that he was also arrested for using a motor vehicle in a dangerous condition, due to the car having a smashed windscreen.

The man has been charged, and is due to appear in court. Police added that social services were also notified in relation to the children in the car.
