A Blue Islands flight was forced to return back to Birmingham Airport shortly after taking off

This is the nail-biting moment an aircraft is forced to return to Birmingham Airport moments after take off.

The Blue Islands flight, which was destined for Jersey, had just departed on Sunday (May 25) when a crew member observed a fault.

Only one front propeller appeared to be fully functioning and the plane swayed slightly as it prepared for its descent, in footage taken by BHXviews.

Fortunately, Flight S12265 landed safely and was met by a Birmingham Airport truck and other vehicles.

The airline said it was down to a technical issue and not engine failure.

Passengers safely disembarked and were provided with a hotel and hot meals before continuing with their onward journey on Bank Holiday Monday.

Birmingham Airport said one other flight was diverted to East Midlands Airport because of the emergency landing.

A Blue Islands spokesperson said: “Blue Islands flight SI2265 from Birmingham to Jersey returned safely to stand in Birmingham yesterday (25 May).

“On departing Birmingham, the crew observed an indication which following standard operating procedure, the aircraft returned to stand and passengers disembarked normally.

“The aircraft is being attended to by our engineers; we are working to minimise the impact to customers, with hotel and meals provided and passengers are travelling on a service from Birmingham to Jersey this afternoon.

“The safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft are our highest priority.”

The airline added: “The engine at no time stopped working in any uncontrolled way.

“The Flight Crew received a cockpit indication of a technical issue.

“They then followed the aircraft manufacturers approved procedures to deal with that issue.

“These procedures have an abundance of caution built into them to ensure passenger safety.”

A BHX spokesperson said: “Following the return of this aircraft shortly after take off, passengers were safely disembarked.

“One flight was diverted, but no other restrictions were placed on the runway as a result of this.

“We apologise for this inconvenience and encourage those impacted, contact their airline for latest information.”
