West Midlands Fire Service continue to work at scene of a fire at a commercial unit on the outskirts of Wolverhampton city centre, with residents urged to avoid the areaA general view of Bilston Road close to the junction of Commercial Road

Twelve West Midlands Fire Service crews are at the scene of a major blaze on the outskirts of Wolverhampton city centre this afternoon, Monday May 26.

A fire took hold of a commercial unit at the junction of Commercial Road and Bilston Road just after 1pm on Monday May 26.

Residents and motorists have been warned to avoid the area as firefighters continue to work to dampen the flames.

West Midlands Fire Service said they received a call at 1:15pm, and emergency service crews including West Midlands Police attended the scene.

West Midlands Police told BirminghamLive they were called by fire service colleagues to assist with road closures.

Fire crews were seen using water from the nearby canal to dampen the flames and pictures shared by local residents showed clouds of smoke in the area.

A West Midlands Fire Service fire fontrol spokesperson told BirminghamLive that fire crews from nine stations were in attendance.

Crews from Wolverhampton, Fallings Park, Bilston, Tettenhall, Dudley, Willenhall, Tipton, Brierley Hill and West Bromwich stations were in attendance at the blaze, said fire control.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: “We currently have 12 appliances in attendance at an incident in the Bilston Road area of Wolverhampton.

“We advise anyone travelling to avoid the area and advise the public to close doors and windows at this time.”

It is understood there is no major impact to traffic in the area, and live traffic systems are not showing any official road closures.
