From August 1, 2025, your Unified Payment Interface (UPI) experience may change. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will roll out new Application Programming Interfaces (API) usage rules for all banks and payment apps.
These changes aim to make the system more secure and efficient—but users may face some restrictions.
Here’s a look at what’s changing:
Balance checks: Now capped at 50 times per app
You will only be able to check your account balance 50 times per day on each UPI app.
If you use two apps, you get 50 balance checks on each.
Beyond that, the app won’t fetch your balance info.
Autopay blocked during peak hours
Autopay mandates will not go through during busy UPI hours:
10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
5:00 PM to 9:30 PM
These payments will only process during non-peak hours. Expect delays if you set up autopay during peak times.
Limited transaction status checks
If a payment fails due to a network issue or technical error, you won’t be able to repeatedly check the status using the app.
NPCI will restrict repeated status checks to reduce system load.
Account list access limited to 25 times
Want to check which bank accounts are linked to your mobile number?
You can do it only 25 times a day per app.
The request will work only if you select your bank and give consent.
Banks and apps must comply
NPCI has directed all banks and payment service providers (PSPs)—like Paytm, PhonePe, and others—to monitor API usage.
Violators may face penalties, usage restrictions, or even a ban on onboarding new users.
All PSPs must also submit a system audit undertaking by August 31, 2025.
NPCI says these limits will help improve system stability and security.
