AMA winners include SZA, Gracie Abrams, Eminem and Billie Eilish

This year’s American Music Awards in Las Vegas honored both music legends and service members, who were recognized for Memorial Day.

The internet can’t quite figure out what to make of her American Music Awards dance number extravaganza from Jennifer Lopez, but it sure has people talking.

JLo, 55, opened the AMAs surrounded by mirrors and dancers in a sci-fi, robo-tech “multiverse.” The singer got “On the Floor” with a 23-song mashup of the year’s biggest hits, including “Squabble Up,” “Good Luck Babe!” and “Denial is a River.” And yes, she made out with three of her dancers.

Ahead of the AMAs, Lopez spoke with USA TODAY about how the awards show ceremony “has been such a big part of my music journey and history.” Lopez pulled double duty as host and performer of this year’s AMAs, a music industry institution since the late Dick Clark began producing it in 1974.

Of her show opening performance, she teased, “We’re going to celebrate the year in music.”

Here’s how viewers on social media reacted to JLo’s performance.

Social media roasts (and praises) JLo’s opening number dance medley

Social media is already abuzz with takes on Lopez’s kiss-off.

“J Lo kissing girls wasn’t on my bingo card,” one user wrote.

Others compared it to the iconic Madonna-Britney Spears kiss at the 2023 MTV VMAs. Others blasted it as queerbaiting.

Some viewers roasted the number, particularly that Lopez was doing a medley of other people’s songs rather than her own.

Others took to X to applaud Lopez’s performance – “I hope I can move like J. Lo is at 55,” one wrote.

“Idc what people have to say. J.Lo gave me what I needed with that opening. Always a STAN!” another posted.
