Safety concerns have been raised after bonfire material gathered in the Bogside in Derry was set alight months in advance of the annual pyre.

The Fire Service attended the Lecky Road site — known locally as ‘The Flyover’ — yesterday after a mattress, tyres and other items stored underneath the structure blazed, producing thick plumes of black smoke.
