Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes was previously labelled ‘not a great athlete’ by pundit Danny Murphy but the Brazil international again led the way for distance covered in the Premier LeagueDanny Murphy and Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes
Bruno Guimaraes has covered more ground than any other player in the Premier League for a second successive season.
Pundit Danny Murphy previously claimed that Bruno was ‘not a great athlete’, but Opta have revealed that Newcastle United captain ran 261 miles this year, which is the equivalent of nearly 10 marathons.
Digging deeper, when it comes to the hardest runners in the top-flight, Bruno ran 7.2 miles per 90 minutes on average, which was the joint-fifth-best return of those who played a minimum of 1,800 minutes.
Perhaps that should not come as a huge surprise. Bruno, who also won the most duels (243) and fouls (108) in the Premier League, works with performance manager Felipe Neves up to six days a week during the season and even has a hyperbaric chamber in his home to aid recovery.
Neves described the Brazil international as ‘one of the most dedicated professionals’ he has encountered.
“He sacrifices a lot of his personal time to do what needs to be done,” Neves previously told ChronicleLive.
“There have been many times where I’ve arrived at his house and he’s with his son [Matteo] and his son says, ‘Stay with me and play!’ but Bruno says, ‘No, I need to work’. It’s a quality that not many people have.”
Eddie Howe appointed Bruno as Newcastle captain at the start of the campaign and the midfielder went on to play a key role in a historic season for the club as the Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and qualified for the Champions League.
“He’s always been a very good role model,” the Newcastle boss said. “He trains very well.
“He’s the ultimate professional. He doesn’t drink. He’s football obsessed and the other players see that.”
