In the days (and years) following your wedding, while you’ll likely look back on the celebration with fond memories of saying “I do” to your spouse, spending time with your loved ones, and dancing the night away at your reception, you may also have a few small regrets. Maybe you wish you had requested that your DJ play a specific song from your and your partner’s go-to playlist or that you had been able to sample one of the late-night snacks at your after-party. However, for one British royal, there’s one major element of her 2009 nuptials that she would immediately change: her hair.
After first meeting on New Year’s Eve in 2006, Sophie Winkleman, an actress, and Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, tied the knot in 2009, three years later. The couple hosted their nuptials at the Hampton Court Palace. Due to the groom’s lineage (his second cousin is King Charles III), a number of members of the British royal family attended the celebration, including Princess Eugenie, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, and the Duke and Duchess of Kent.
However, even though the event may have been defined by its lengthy guest list and elaborate décor, for the couple, it was also filled with heightened stress. “It was such a blur because we had to move to Los Angeles the day after and I had to start a brand new job the day after that,” Sophie recently told The Telegraph in an interview. “So we got married on Saturday and moved everything, our whole lives out to America the day after. And I’d been so concentrating on the work that I hadn’t thought about the wedding.” As a result of the changes in her personal life, Sophie said she didn’t have time to style her hair the way she would have liked to. “Which meant that my hair was so disgusting, and Freddy still gets upset about it,” she told the outlet. “It was just disgusting. And my mother-in-law chose my dress, which was very sweet and puffy, but I looked barking.”

Since the bride was so focused on the impending move and her new acting role, she didn’t mind the fact that someone else selected her gown—until now. “I thought, ‘Great, do everything,'” she said in the interview. “I was concentrating on this acting job and saying goodbye to my darling granny who wasn’t very well and just doing other stuff. But now I look back on it and think I should have worn a simpler dress, and I should have got my hair blow dried by someone who’d done it before.” It also appears that she looks back on the guest list with regret. In a 2024 interview with the Daily Mail, the former bride said she knew very few of the people who attended her nuptials. “I had my best pals there but basically it was full of faces I’d never seen before,” she told the outlet.
