The long-running contract saga between Liverpool and Mohamed Salah has finally been resolved, weeks from the end of the season – and fans in the Echo comments section are relieved that the deal has been struck after so much time waiting for news from the club hierarchy.
Salah will stick around for two more years, and has reportedly earned an improvement on his basic per-week pay after having his best season since his explosive debut, all the way back in 2017/18. He has 32 goals in all competitions so far this season, having made up a huge share of Liverpool’s total, seemingly on their way to another Premier League title.
The star forward had been in danger of leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season, and fans had been frustrated by the lack of news on his future while seeing his goals tally fly up. Salah was insistent that he wanted to stay at Anfield, telling the club’s official website: “Of course I’m very excited.
“We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football. It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
It’s a big relief for some fans. Reader Drewdrew74 says: “What great news for the end of the week. Come on Mo, please propel us to the finishing line by scoring and assisting in our next game against West Ham and get the all important 3 points on Sunday. I am sure the roof will be off at Anfield.”
Commenter Ceelers agrees: “Get in! Now let’s get Virgil van Dijk signed, then get this title over the line. YNWA.” Kloppisgod jokes: “Lend us a fiver Salah lad, hahaha. All jokes aside, made up he’s staying, absolute legend.”
Redtothebones says: “Great news… Congratulations to the Reds, him and us all hopefully!” 1995wow writes: “Great stuff. Virgil next, and the league title still to come.”
Darwinism says: “The best signing is holding on to your best talent. Brilliant news.” Bebbi94 adds: “Thank you Basel for molding Mo back in 2012, & putting him on track to be a 9 season Kop wonder.”
Other fans are looking to the future. Pangpang123 says: “This would only mean we have 2 years to find a replacement. And we need to start looking for a new RW this summer. We need at least someone to challenge Mo on the right wing and even replace him eventually in 1 or 2 years time. Same goes to VVD who I believe it would be his final season in 2 years too.
“Time to really change the policy in renewing the contract. We are playing with fire. Konate and Diaz would be next. Same goes to Allison. Because that would mean we stand to lose Allison, VVD and Salah in 2027 all together. With the way the club is running, losing players for free would burn a big hole into the transfer kitty.”
NigelRG writes: “I’m glad things are working out, but Salah needs a backup. I think Elliott is much better as a midfielder than a forward, but Chiesa could be the man. The problem is that Arne doesn’t like either of them. “
