A sinkhole has appeared on a busy road in Prestwich again. The collapsed road is on Whittaker Lane, which has remained open for the time being.

A picture shared to the M.E.N shows a cone placed on the small sinkhole that is in the middle of the road. Last month, Whittaker Lane was closed off for a week after a crater was opened up by workers investigating ‘a dip in the road’.

The road, which runs between Bury Old Road and Bury New Road is a well used local link route.

A Bury Council spokesperson said: “Whittaker Lane, Prestwich is closed in both directions due to a sink hole in the road. A signed diversion is in place.

“United Utilities are aware and will attend to assess the cause of the collapse. Please allow more time to travel. Buses will be diverted.”

The hole is the latest in a series that has blighted Prestwich for years.

Earlier this month, chaos was caused when a major route that runs through three boroughs of Greater Manchester was closed due to a sinkhole.

Bury New Road, which connects Manchester to Bury through Salford, and is a commuter route taking traffic to the M60 and Whitefield, was closed in both directions after a collapse revealed an underground ‘void’ across the A-road’s full width.

The busy route was closed in both directions to all vehicles near Clifton Road, close to the Rudy’s Pizza branch and the Railway and Naturalist pub for almost a week.

In July 2023 Whittaker Lane made headlines again after work was needed near Egerton Street and barriers were set up to fence off the area. In the same year, another sinkhole was found on Heywood Road, a street where a similar hole had opened up in 2016.

In August 2021, a similar road failure caused the closure of the Heywood Road-Bury New Road junction for two days.
