Manchester United have announced the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

United triggered the £62.5million release clause in Cunha’s contract at the Molineux Stadium, and the forward has signed a five-year contract, with the option of another year.

Cunha will officially complete his move to United when he returns from international duty.

United released a statement and said: “Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration.”

Cunha scored 17 goals and tallied six assists in a struggling Wolves side this season. He was named the man of the match in both of Wolves’ Premier League wins against United, scoring direct from a corner at Molineux.

The 26-year-old has been identified as a specialist No.10 to bolster United’s attacking options behind the striker.

United refused to break the £60million barrier for any of their five summer signings last year, but they will stagger the £62.5m payment for Cunha in instalments.

Amorim billed Cunha as “real quality” on the eve of the 1-0 defeat to Wolves. “He [Wolves coach Vitor Pereira] is playing a 3-4-3, he’s doing quite well! He’s changing some players, he has real quality players – Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality.”

When pressed on Cunha and possible interest from United, Amorim replied: “I just gave the example because I remembered about Matheus. He’s scoring a lot of goals. Just that.”

Cunha is the first new face through the door at Carrington this summer. United have just endured the worst season in the club’s modern history and Amorim will strengthen his squad.

United were hopeful of signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, but the 22-year-old has decided to sign for Chelsea, who are set to trigger his £30m relegation clause at Portman Road.

Other striker targets will be considered and Amorim is expected to sign a new right wing-back.
