A fire that had caused plumes of smoke to billow over the M5 near Bristol is believed to have been started deliberately.

The fire, which was discovered to be on Kings Weston Lane, in Avonmouth, resulted in thick, black smoke which caused a significant hazard for drivers.

The fire was reported at 3.39pm on Friday, May 30.

It is understood that during the fire, National Highways placed slow signs along the M5 as a result of the smoke causing difficult driving conditions.

The smoke could be seen for miles around.

Avon Fire and Rescue said that the fire was a pile of rubbish burning.

Crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Temple and Kingswood were sent to the scene.

Firefighters used water jets and hoses to extinguish the fire, whilst wearing breathing apparatus.

No one was injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is thought to be deliberate.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: “On Friday, May 30, at 3.39pm, crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Temple and Kingswood fire stations were called to reports of a rubbish fire on Kings Weston Lane, Avonmouth.

“The crews extinguished the fire using water jets and hoses.

“Firefighters wore breathing apparatus.

“Fortunately, no one was injured. The cause of the fire is thought to be deliberate.”
