Emergency services taped off Castlefield Bowl on Tuesday evening (June 3) after a body was found in the water.

Police, paramedics and fire crews cordoned off the area beside Liverpool Road shortly after 5pm after receiving reports of a body in the canal.

A nearby resident said a boater on a canal barge raised the alarm after seeing what she initially thought was a coat in the water before the body resurfaced.

“It was one of the boaters who called the police,” they said. “She saw what she thought was a coat floating in the water. She came back later on and it had resurfaced from under the boats.

“The emergency services descended on the area and quickly evacuated us all.

“They handled it very well and quickly, and put a big cordon in place across the whole area from the hotel. It was a big operation.”

Pictures from the scene showed multiple fire and water rescue units in attendance, along with officers from Greater Manchester Police.

The force has confirmed enquiries are ongoing after a body was recovered from the water at around 5.10pm. No further details have been released.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 5.10pm today (3 June 2025), emergency services were called to reports of a body in the canal close to Liverpool Road, Manchester.

“Officers attended and sadly, a body was subsequently recovered from the water. Enquiries are currently ongoing.”
