HAREL DU MARAIS did well to finish so close to the enterprisingly-ridden winner over this course and distance two weeks ago, still having plenty to do at the end of the back straight, while a mistake at three out didn’t help his claims. He’s made a positive start for this yard and can enhance his excellent record around here. Sean Bowen got a good tune out of Delpotro when making all at Sedgefield three weeks ago and looks the obvious threat.

It could be worth chancing the veteran JIMMY THE DIGGER, who returned to form last time and a reproduction of his fine second in a competitive Cheltenham amateurs’ handicap in the autumn would give him every chance. Though not a habitual front-runner, it’s a role he’s performed in the past, and he could prove hard to peg back round here with Sam Twiston-Davies taking over in the saddle. Chase debutant Bective Abbey could be the main danger.

Most of these are bred to need longer trips over obstacles, which is true of LADIES DAY, but she displayed enough when third at Warwick to think she can win a bumper against her own sex. That’s also a sharp track, while it wasn’t run at a true gallop, either, and Ladies Day should be sharper for that initial experience now. Hard Market is a threat, while Rosie Baloo won’t have to be out of the ordinary to figure on debut.

WASTHATOK bounced back to form when second to Zucayan over a similar trip at Ludlow last month, making smooth headway approaching three from home, where a less-than-fluent jump hampered his momentum. He stuck to his task well, though, and meets that rival on revised terms now. He started out in Britain from a mark of 120 and looks ready to take advantage of this much lower mark. Zenato and Play Pretend are others to consider.

DELGANY BOBBY BLUE shaped well on more than one occasion over hurdles in 2023/24 and, with fitness unlikely to be an issue given the stable he represents, he makes a fair amount of appeal with the drop back to two and a half miles looking in his favour. Built By Rossies has shown a fair level of form in Ireland and is an interesting recruit for her new yard, having won a point earlier in the year, while Don Virginia ought to make his presence felt.

A number of these arrive with a question mark against them, and the thriving AAZZA is fancied to quickly resume winning ways on the back of a very good second at Bangor. He failed to complete a hat-trick on that occasion, but proved as good as ever, and is fancied to launch another bold bid. The reliable Champetre is feared most, if building on his Ffos Las fourth after an absence, while Zarhanya, Rubies Or Gold and Fantomas need factoring in.
