I’ve tried my fair share of workout classes over the years, but I’ve never really found the one for me. Some are too intense, and others don’t feel like enough of a workout.

Mostly, I just enjoy moving my body in ways that feel good: going for walks, hiking, or doing some casual yoga here and there. That said, I’m always down to try something new — especially if it’s free!

Which is why I hit up Orangetheory Fitness Canada ahead of National Health & Fitness Day. To celebrate, the fitness brand is offering a full week of free classes from June 7 – 14 at over 100 of their studios across Canada.

So, I gave it a go, and here’s how it went.

Orangetheory offers fun group workouts that combine strength, cardio, and interval training — all led by expert coaches. But what sets it apart from your average class is its use of real-time heart rate tracking and zones.

There are five zones, and the goal is to spend 12–20 minutes in the “Orange Zone” — the spot where your heart rate is elevated enough to supercharge your metabolism, burn fat, and even continue burning calories for up to 24 hours after class.

Using their OTconnect heart-rate monitors, which you wear on your wrist or upper arm, you’re able to see your stats on a screen in real time — including which zone you’re in — so you can adjust your effort and train smarter based on your own fitness level and goals.

Now, I’ll be real with you — I didn’t exactly spend enough time in the “Orange Zone.” But the coach reassured me that it can take a few classes to get there. It’s less about competing with others and more about going at your own pace and learning how your body responds. Plus, now I’ve got a goal to aim for next time!

The workout was divided into three parts, with half the time dedicated to cardio, and the other half to floor work.

We kicked things off on the rowing machine, something I’d seen at the gym but never actually used before. Turns out, it’s a full-body workout that engages your legs, core, back, and arms, making it an effective way to get warmed up.

Orangetheory likes to keep things fresh with themed classes, so ours had a fun twist: a partner workout. I had to row 200 metres while my partner held a squat, then we switched back and forth. Let’s just say my legs still hurt!

For the second part of the class, we moved to the floor for weighted squats, planks, push-ups, and other strength-based exercises. Our coach demoed each move, checked on our form, and made sure everyone felt supported — a personal touch I really appreciated. Screens on each side of the room also showed the exercises, making it easy to follow along.

Then came the treadmills. Since I’m not really a runner, I opted for a power walk with an incline, thinking it’d be the easy way out. But, trust me, I still worked up a sweat!

The format follows intervals, so you move between a base pace and more challenging speeds or inclines, designed to thrust you into the “Orange Zone.” It was tough but doable, and most importantly, actually fun.

Overall, I appreciated how approachable, customizable, and supportive my first Orangetheory class felt. The fact that you could take it at your own pace meant it was inclusive for all, which I loved.

Whether you’re just getting back into working out, starting for the first time, or looking to switch up your routine, I think Orangetheory makes for a serious sweat session. And trying a class for free during National Health & Fitness Day is the perfect time to check it out.

And honestly? I’d go back! Even with my sore legs.
