Having lost his way for the O’Neill yard last year, YES INDEED showed the immediate benefit of a change of scenery/eight-month break when successful under Sean Bowen at Stratford last month and, remaining well treated on his old form, he gets the nod to concede weight to his two rivals and make it two out of two for Martin Keighley. Famoso, who finished a place ahead of Dexter at Ludlow three weeks ago, can chase him home.
Down in grade and reunited with Callum Pritchard (placed on his two previous rides), IRIS DES ISSARDS may break his maiden tag for Kayley Woollacott in an ordinary race for the grade. Stage Show needs to bounce back from some lesser efforts, but merits consideration racing from a career-low hurdles mark, while the enigmatic She Has Notions isn’t ruled out with the stable’s conditional Freddie Keighley claiming a valuable 10lb against fellow conditionals.
A tricky puzzle to solve despite the small field for this mares’ maiden hurdle, but MIGHTY FLEUR was placed on all three starts in bumpers, so she gets the nod to make a winning hurdling debut for Peter & Michael Bowen after five months off. Heading up the dangers is Merry Shuil, who showed much more than she had in a bumper in Ireland, finishing fourth first time up over hurdles at Carlisle in February. Jokers ‘N’ Clowns can fill out third.
It might pay to take a chance on Tom Lacey’s TOWNHILL who mixed it in better company than this when successful three times last summer, and now races from 1lb below his latest winning mark, that victory also come over course and distance. Last month’s Exeter winner Coconut Twist has proved remarkably consistent over hurdles of late, and should go well again, while Pike Road may be able to recapture his form now reunited with Sean Bowen.
LORD BADDESLEY needs to put a below-par display in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster behind him, but Anthony Honeyball’s top weight faces a notably easier task here with that run under his belt, so he could be the way to go from a potentially lenient mark down in trip. Both Jaramillo, on just his third start over fences, and multiple course scorer Investment Manager merit respect in another chase on the card with just three runners.
Not a strong-looking bumper on paper and Chris Down’s mare WINTERS HILL is chanced over fellow newcomer Call Me Legend, an ex-Irish pointer from the Philip Hobbs & Johnson White stable. The selection makes appeal on pedigree, out of a half-sister to dual Northumberland Plate winner Tominator. Border Gem and Josh Central have shown a bit in this sphere and could figure prominently.
